Your Doula

Kandice Burts CD- B/P

What is a Doula?

A Doula accompanies women in labor to help ensure a safe and satisfying birth experience. I have received my Bachelor’s in Biomedical Science and professional education for the role of Doula and have the following experience: I have 3 children of my own, all delivered vaginally and I have coached and counseled numerous Moms – like you -  in preparing to become a Doula. I draw on my knowledge and experience to provide emotional support, physical comfort and, as needed, communication with the medical staff to make sure that you have the information you need to make informed decisions as they arise in labor. I can provide reassurance and perspective to you and your partner; make suggestions, not decisions, for labor and its progress. My help with relaxation, massage, positioning and other techniques are for your comfort and gentle progression into the birth process.

I am an independent Doula.

As your Doula, I am working for you, not your caregiver or the hospital. I believe that you are in charge of your own birth and that I am the invited guest. I am there to serve you to help you have the type of birth you have envisioned for yourself.  I also strongly support siblings and their families as well.  If you are preparing for your second, third or even fourth child, I assist with sibling involvement and helping children understand the transition and changes that will soon take place so they can cope with the newest addition to the family.

Why do you need a Doula?

A labor doula will meet with the woman and her family prenatally to discuss the woman's birth desires. She will help the soon-to-be parent(s) develop a birth plan and understand all the choices that encompass
pregnancy, childbirth, and the early postpartum period.

11 independent studies have proven the following benefits to having a doula present at your birth:

50% reduction in the cesarean rate
25% shorter labor
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in Pitocin/Oxytocin use
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery
